Citizen Legislators, Not Career Politicians
I am proud to announce that I have officially pledged my support for Congressional Term Limits. This week, U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national movement to limit terms for elected officials, recognized our campaign for this commitment. I joined over 150 pledge signers in agreeing that it is time to replace career politicians with citizen legislators.
As Philip Blumel, the President of USTL, stated in their recent press release: "America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians." I couldn't agree more. The statistics are clear. According to Pew Research, 87% of Americans reject the career politician model. We need fresh ideas and real representation in Washington, not lifetime appointments.
The Direct Democracy Difference
However, I need to make a very important distinction about what this pledge means for our campaign. For most politicians, signing a pledge card is a locked door. It is a guarantee of how they will vote regardless of what happens in the future. For me, this pledge is an endorsement of the idea and a statement of my personal belief.
Personally, I believe we need term limits to fix the stagnation in Washington. But under my Direct Democracy platform, my personal belief will never supersede your will.
Make no mistake: My vote belongs to you.
If the people of District 11 were to vote against term limits, I would vote against term limits. I will never prioritize my personal opinion, or a signed pledge card, over the will of the majority.
Leading with Data
I recently had a great conversation with the team at U.S. Term Limits about this specific nuance. They fully support my approach because they know the data is on our side. With over 80% of Americans supporting this measure, they are confident, as am I, that when I put this up for a vote, the people will lead the way.
